What is FLVS?

Florida Virtual School (FLVS) provides online K–12 education solutions to students all over Florida, the U.S. and the world.  FLVS is free * to Florida residents. There are two different Florida Virtual School programs. FLVS and FLVS FT (full time).

FLVS is available to homeschoolers registered with their district school and students enrolled in private schools (i.e.; our umbrella school) and serves students in grades 6–12 only. Students may take up to six courses at a time.

FLVS FT offers K–12 instruction, however, when your child is enrolled in this program, FLVS FT becomes the school of record—in which case your child would not enroll in an umbrella school. Students enrolled at FLVS FT must meet all public school requirements for attendance and standardized test participation.  Please visit their website for more information.

May my child enroll at FLVS?

Yes!  Middle school and high school students enrolled in our school are eligible for enrollment at FLVS (not FLVS FT).  Students will sign up with FLVS as Private School Students enrolled at Aspiring Heights Academy, not as Homeschooled Students.  For more information and some helpful links for both before and after enrollment with FLVS, please click here.

How does it work?

First, FLVS will ask you to select courses. Then, you will sign up for a Student Account. Parents also have the option of setting up a Parent/Guardian Account. Next, we will need to approve the requested courses.  FLVS will notify us of pending course requests, but usually several days after they have been requested.  If you would like to have the courses approved sooner, please send us an email to let us know that you have requested courses. Finally, classrooms will be assigned. This can take anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks.

How long do courses take to complete?

Depending on the course, courses can take between 16 and 36 weeks to complete. Courses are broken down into segments (a/k/a semesters), and each segment takes between 16-18 weeks to complete. Some courses have two segments (such as math and science); some have only one segment (such as U.S. Government and certain electives). Students are not required to take both segments of a two segment course. Each segment is worth 1/2 credit.

What if my child doesn't like a course?

FLVS gives students 14 days to try out courses. If a course is too easy, too difficult, or doesn't meet a student's expectations, a student may drop the course without penalty during the first 14 days of being activated in the course.

Does my child have to take the End-of-Course (EOC) Assessments?

No. Private school students enrolled at FLVS are not required to take the EOC assessments that have been implemented for several high school level courses. However, your child may take the Algebra I, Biology I, and Geometry EOC assessments, if desired.  For more information about EOC assessments, please click here.

What if my child is already taking courses at FLVS?

If your child has already signed up for courses at FLVS as a homeschool student, public school student, or as a student enrolled in another private school, upon enrollment in our school, your child will need to change his or her Academic Profile to reflect Aspiring Heights Academy as the physical school.  You will find our school listed under the Sarasota District.
