Certification(s): State of Florida Elementary Education (K-6) and Reading (K-12)
Qualifications & Experience: I homeschooled both of my children from K-through high school. We were unschoolers and had the most wonderful time learning together! Once they had graduated and gone on to college, I then returned to the classroom to teach for another 7 years where I taught 3rd grade and 5th grade. I also tutor all subject areas in grades K-6, as well as reading and writing in grades K-12. (in compliance with Florida homeschooling Statute 1002.43) I have a Masters of Education in Reading and I am able to provide reading diagnostic tests. I have been trained in the Orton-Gillingham method. I am able to provide screening for dyslexia and provide tutoring for struggling readers and writers using the O-G method. I am able to assess, evaluate and teach children how to read, write, and spell proficiently.
What to Expect at Your Evaluation: I recognize that there are many different homeschooling styles, and that will be taken into consideration during these evaluations as I meet with you and your child. I will need to see a portfolio of your child’s work throughout the year. I will look for “demonstration of educational progress commensurate with her or his ability” as stated in Florida Statute 1002.41. I will also have a discussion with your child as I look at his or her portfolio. Parents may be present during the portfolio review, but please allow the conversation to be between myself and the child. I am also available to do evaluations via phone once portfolio materials have been sent to me via mail or electronically and I have had the opportunity to look them over. Evaluations can also be done online, using Skype or FaceTime, if no other option is available. In all evaluations, I will need to see a portfolio of your child’s work and to speak with the child about his or her learning. Documentation of the evaluation will be provided immediately if done in person. If conducted online or over the phone, the documentation will be sent electronically once completed. Submission of documentation is the parent’s responsibility.
Location(s): I reside in Hawthorne, just outside of Gainesville. I can perform evaluations at your home (or an agreed upon location) in Putnam, Alachua, Bradford, Clay, and Marion counties. Evaluations can also be done via phone/mail, and online.
Cost: $45.00 per evaluation; $30 additional family member
