Preliminary SAT (PSAT)

The College Board offers three Preliminary SATs to help students prepare for the SAT: PSAT 8/9, PSAT 10, and PSAT/NMSQT. They are administered by U.S. high schools as either computer-based or paper-based tests. The PSAT 8/9 is typically given to eighth and ninth grade students, and the PSAT 10 and PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) are typically given to tenth and eleventh grade students. Students entering the National Merit Scholarship Program, a scholarship competition based on academics, must take the PSAT/NMSQT during their third year (11th grade) even if they took it in their second year (10th grade).
