Overview

Pizza Fraction Fun is designed for 2 to 6 players and includes game variations for beginners to grade 5+. Players build pizzas while working with halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, eighths, ninths, twelfths, and sixteenths. Fraction numerals are printed on one side only. Younger players can use the pizza slices to begin identifying fractions; older players can add and subtract fractions and say equations.

Contents

  • 64 double-sided pizza slices (enough for thirteen 10 3/4" pizzas)
  • 3 double-sided spinners
  • 1 spinner center
  • 2 piece plastic spinner arrow (not intended to be taken apart once assembled)

  • Price

  • $19.99 (at the time of this review)

How to Play

There are seven different game variations, but basically each game requires that players spin the spinner and follow the directions. A player will either add, lose, or swap pizza slices. Depending on which game variation is being played, players might:

  • Make whole pizzas using a combination of toppings and fractions
  • Make "pizza sandwiches" by collecting equivalent matches
  • Collect whole pizzas by combining multiples of fractions
  • Toss pizza slices into the center by matching equivalent fractions
  • Build pizzas using only one topping
  • Collect one of each size slice of pizza
  • Build one-topping pizzas by slicing up the center pizzas

Educational Emphasis

This clever math game teaches kids specifically about fractions.

  • Identifying and estimating fractions up to 1
  • Matching and manipulating equivalent fractions
  • Adding and subtracting fractions

The Good

There are so many good things to say about this game! We all enjoyed playing the different game variations. I love that the pizza slices give a visual to multiples of fractions. It's easy to see that 1/8 is a multiple of 1/2 and 1/9 is a multiple of 1/3 when placing the pieces on top of and next to each other. The kids really like that the pizza slices are so realistic.

  • Easy first-time assembly and future game set up.
  • Multiple game variations and levels of play.
  • Double-sided pizza slices lets this game grow with your child.
  • Pieces are made of durable, heavy-duty cardboard with a quality glossy finish.
  • Lifelike pizza slices make learning fractions fun.

The Not-So-Good

There was only one downside we found while playing this game. It can sometimes be difficult to tell if a combination of pieces makes an equivalent fraction without actually doing the math or understanding multiples. Since the pieces may slide around, younger players may think certain fraction combinations are equivalent when comparing them visually.

Tips

  • Don't play this game when you're hungry!
  • Includes an Equivalency Key for reference.

Recommendation

We highly recommend Pizza Fraction Fun to families homeschooling primary and middle school students.
